Aiwa CSD-G1M Mega Drive
The Aiwa CSD-G1M Mega Drive boom box is probably one of the coolest concepts we have seen so far. We can imagine ourselves walking down the street blasting our favorite music, and later stopping at a nearby friend's house to challenge them to some good gaming. Well not exactly...but close enough..
The CSD-GM1 was manufactured and released by Japanese stereo company Aiwa in October of 1994. It
was a portable CD, radio and tape player (a ghetto blaster) that could also play
Megadrive, Mega CD, and 32X games via an extra base section that could be attached to the
bottom of the unit. The base attachment contained the cartridge port on the
front, joypad connectors, reset button and AV out port. Mega CD games
were played using the unit’s CD tray. The placement of the cartridge port made 32X gaming difficult (but not impossible) since the add on was too bulky.
The base unit and main unit were attached via serial cable at the back.
The Aiwa CSD-G1M Mega Drive boom box included a custom blue colored joypad, but no pack in game. It retailed for 45000 Yen. It also features a Karaoke function. It is rumored that this device made it to European shelves, but other then that was never released outside of Japan.
